Impact moling is a trenchless method used to install pipes, cables, and ducts underground without digging continuous trenches. Instead, small holes are excavated at intervals usually ranging from 10 to 15 metres per hole, and the moling equipment is placed inside them.

The mole travels through the soil from the entry excavation to the exit excavation, forming a narrow tunnel that allows the required utility to be pulled through ranging from 25mm to 32mm with a standard mole, and 50mm to 63mm with the larger mole.

In practice, the mole is a steel, air-powered device that uses compressed air to drive itself forward, breaking through the ground and creating a bore for the new pipe. This method significantly reduces installation time, surface disruption, and overall costs.
